You’re here because you want to see change. The first step to preventing gun violence is to start talking about the actions we can take to make a difference in our families, communities and country.  So how do you get started?

Define the goal together.

When in conversation, identify and agree on the parameters of this conversation. It might seem silly, but this step is critical to your success. Make sure everyone is on the same page before taking any further action. A few questions you can ask the group:

  • What problem are we trying to solve?
  • What goals will help us reach success?
  • What kind of effect will we want to have on others? (Locally? Nationally?)

First, talk through these questions thoroughly and write the answers. In talking about the problem, your goals may change. Check in at the end of the discussion. Be sure your goals fall in line with the established problem you are trying to solve.

Your goal will be your “true north.” Documentation is important at every step. Use your goals to keep your group on task throughout future meetings and activities.

Use the data, conversation best practices, film clips, literature and art vetted by our steering committee to learn more about the issue and hear stories of impact from both sides of the divide.
